"Emergency" (last minute request for translation & Navigating 'abilities"!) Trip to BUFFALO, USA!
Irene BALLA arrives at my door 10h30 asking me if I want to "go shopping"!
ME, a NONE "Shopper?", I asked.
I had JUST made arrangements for the understood time of departure to be SATURDAY morning - NOT Friday!
.... and the "shopping" was to be in the U.S. of A.!
OK!
Think quickly!
"Puli's papers to cross the US-Border carefully packed, water for long car wait, sustenance for both people & beast ... something to read, something to drink ...
15 minutes LATER ...
... "room -in-the-Inn" is found for Puli at local boarding Kennel, on way out of town ... relief for Owner, Barbara; poor Puli didn't know what to think, placed amidst a kennel of yapping dogs and left alone!
NOW ... to get through to Buffalo International Airport for 16h30 arrival of Vizsla bitch from Utah.
Road signage as well as Exits are FEW, on the User-Pay roads of the Sate of New York ... and we complain about OTM!
"No problem', I say, "the BLACKBERY has GOOGLE maps!"
BLACKBERRY dies, without battery re-charger on-board 2 hours into trip!
1/2 hour from Border I REALIZE I FORGOT MY PASSPOR T ... I have the Puli's (who is no longer with us) papers' !!!
... so ... remembering my RED RAINBOOTS ...
... extreme effort is made NOT to worry for thirty minutes and 'compose' a story ... "I have a new Driver's License!". I'll simply wait in lint INSIDE and let Irene drive by herself to pick-up Vizsla ... right?!?!!
Well ... despite lack of signage and inability of Personnel to direct us to the 'correct line-up ... it wasn't all THAT bad!
They HAD to do their job!
... and THEN to get to the Airport ... well, we had just driven to the Airport and successfully shipped-off two Puli puppies; so when we arrive at 16h, we thought, "Great! We can grab a bite to eat!".
We casually eat lunch and saunter down to Baggage Collection ... at 16h45 we FINALLY ask and find-out (we shoudl have know ... I guess!) that Dogs travelling by themselves are received at CARGO - for Delta airlines.
OK we just have to a a Staff-person, right?!@ THREE people in uniform attempted to direct us to what they thought was CARGO - nobody REALLY knew, but refused to ask someone who did! they did a TERRIFIC job at feeling like "dumb Canadians"!
At last, we encounter a 'sensible' and courteous Cargo Handler ... who hunted and loved dogs!
By the time we exited the Airport, stopped for a cold STARBUCKS coffee AND found our way to the poorly signed-Interstate 90 it was almost 19h!
The signs for CANADA were oh, so sweet!
"And do you have proof that you are not smuggling this dog into Canada and it is actually here for 10 day", the very young, good looking and very andpersonable Official at the Canadian Border asked.
?!??!?!?!?!?
.... but after I calmly recounted our story - Irene's English at this point was indecipherable! - he realized the Truth and allowed us to beginning our 3-hour ride to the GTA!
It wasn't until we crossed Lake Ontario on the Burlington Sky Bridge that the sunset was behind our backs that I was able to sit back and rest my head on the seat! !
... oh, did I mention ... the van we were travelling in does NOT have air conditioning - and - the heater is PERMANENLTY exhausting HEAT ... so my right shoulder is aching from holding my hand on my head to stop my Australian BARMAH from blowing out the window!
After enabling a much needed 'bladder-release for the Day's-Driver, dearest Irene, I was able to creep into the apartment and pass-out on the bed (another reason Separate beds for Living Partners is BEST-for-Success!)
I can hardly await the RETURN trip in 10 days!
